How an FFL transfer works
- Find a local FFL dealer. Pick your city and choose a dealer that has confirmed it takes transfers. Call to confirm they will accept a shipment from your seller and ask about the fee.
- Give the dealer's FFL info to the seller. The online retailer or private seller needs a copy of the dealer's license to ship the firearm. Most dealers handle this directly with the seller.
- Wait for the firearm to arrive. The seller ships to the dealer, never to your home. The dealer logs the firearm into their records when it arrives.
- Complete Form 4473 and the background check. Visit the shop with a valid government-issued ID, fill out ATF Form 4473, and pass the NICS background check.
- Pay the transfer fee and take possession. Pay the dealer's transfer fee (commonly $20-$75; each city page shows the fees we found) plus any state fees, observe any state waiting period, and take your firearm home.

FFL transfer questions
What is an FFL transfer?
An FFL transfer is the legal process of transferring a firearm to you through a Federal Firearms Licensee. When you buy a gun online or from an out-of-state seller, it must ship to a licensed dealer near you, who runs the required background check and paperwork before handing it over.
How much does an FFL transfer cost?
Each dealer sets their own fee. Most charge between $20 and $75 per firearm, and some states add background-check or registration fees. Call the dealer to confirm before shipping.
Who can do an FFL transfer near me?
Any active Type 01 dealer, Type 02 pawnbroker, or Type 07/08 manufacturer or importer can receive and process transfers, but not all of them choose to. The city pages above mark the dealers that have confirmed they take transfers; call to confirm before you ship.
How long does an FFL transfer take?
Once the firearm arrives at the dealer, the transfer itself usually takes 15-30 minutes if your background check comes back "proceed" immediately. Delayed checks and state waiting periods can add days.
